‘Farragut Fridays’ Brighten Summer Months with Weekly Activities in Park

WASHINGTON, D.C., March 23, 2017 – Summer Fridays in the city! What better time and place to wind down the work week, enjoy leisure activities with friends, and gear up for the weekend? From May through September, the Golden Triangle Business Improvement District (BID) will present a wide array of free, outdoor events, highlighted by its signature “Farragut Fridays” series each week in Farragut Park, at Connecticut Avenue and K Street, NW, Washington, D.C.

Farragut Fridays are planned for each Friday, from May 12 through September 29. Each week, Farragut Park is activated with table set-ups from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for “outdoor office” use by area workers, with free WiFi access. From noon to 2 p.m. on each of the Fridays, the park comes alive for fun, lunchtime activities, including lawn games and “pop-up events,” which change each week. Examples of these activities include:

  • A showcase of adoptable puppies from the Humane Rescue Alliance (formerly the Washington Humane Society and Washington Animal Rescue League). Along with the puppies, the Alliance will bring along some of their human companions to help find forever homes for these  lovable pets.
  • Chef demonstrations led by noteworthy culinary experts from various local restaurants.
  • Games, games and more games: ping-pong, corn hole, jenga, foosball and badminton. August’s Golden Games offers an end-of-summer ping pong tournament to determine the champion of Farragut Square.
  • Live entertainment provided in partnership with Wolf Trap and other arts organizations.

The Golden Triangle BID website will be updated throughout the summer with details on what is planned for each particular Friday.

From June through early August, Farragut Fridays expands to include the popular “Golden Cinema” outdoor movie series on Friday evenings, beginning at sunset. Hundreds of movie-goers fill the park to enjoy various classics or soon-to-be-classics, all appropriate for viewing by the whole family. This year’s series kicks off on June 2 with recent Academy Award Best Picture nominee, Hidden Figures. Others in the 2017 series include Ferris Bueller, Moana, The Princess Bride, and Finding Dory. The complete schedule is posted on the web.

Once again this year, the Golden Triangle BID will also be presenting its TriFit series, featuring three types of outdoor exercise classes each week on three different days. All classes are free and will be offered from May 2 through September 28, from 5:30-6:30 p.m. on the following days and at these locations:

  • Tuesdays – Yoga, in Farragut Park
  • Wednesdays – Barre, in the Plaza at 2100 M Street
  • Thursdays – Pilates, in Farragut Park

In addition to being set up for picnics in Farragut Park on Fridays, the Golden Triangle also hosts Picnic in the Park events at two other locations:

  • Wednesdays — Murrow Park at 18th & H Streets (Noon-2 p.m.)
  • Thursdays – Monroe Park at 20th & I Streets (Noon-2 p.m.)

For those who want to work outdoors, free WiFi access is available in Farragut, Murrow  and Monroe Parks.
