Tuesday, June 21, 2016

WASHINGTON, D.C.–In a year of intense competition, from elections to the Olympics, the Golden Triangle is entering the fray with a competition of its own. Buildings downtown are upping their game and vying for your vote on their gardens this week. The 26 displays in the annual Golden Street competition feature elaborate decorations including decorative boulders, multiple tiers, swarming bubble bees, musical instruments, and more than 50 varieties of flowers and plants.

The friendly competition is among properties in the Golden Triangle, a 43-block neighborhood that extends from the White House to Dupont Circle. Public voting for the “People’s Choice” award ends on Thursday, June 23.

The tree boxes will also be judged for design and sustainability by a panel of experts including horticulturists at the Smithsonian Institution Alex Dencker and James Gagliardi, and the editor and publisher at Washington Gardener Magazine, Kathryn Jentz. They will walk the Golden Triangle to see all the gardens on Thursday, June 23, from 9 a.m. –noon. They will be joined by Ahmed Hassan, former TV Host of HGTV’s Yard Crashers, and Meaghan Mooney, WUSA9 Lifestyle Reporter and Host of Great Day Washington.

In addition, Hassan will be hosting an urban gardening demonstration at the Golden Triangle’s Farragut Fridays on June 24, from 11:30 a.m.–2:30 p.m. in Farragut Square Park at 17th Street and Connecticut Avenue, NW.

“Washington is already a beautiful city. This competition will help us take the green space we already have to the next level,” said Leona Agouridis, executive director of the Golden Triangle BID. “Since the competitions started five years ago, we’ve be impressed by the level of creativity in the tree gardens .”
