Golden Triangle BID Launches 2018 Summer Event Season

WASHINGTON, DC (April 20, 2018) – It’s Golden Outside… Escape the Indoors! As warm weather approaches, the Golden Triangle Business Improvement District (BID) announces the launch of its annual, five-month outdoor events season that runs from May through September. The season opens on May 1 with the start of the Golden Triangle’s TriFit outdoor exercise program in Farragut Square, followed by the kickoff on May 11 of the weekly Farragut Fridays series. In June, the season expands further to include the 10-night Golden Cinema movie series on Friday nights in Farragut Square, and Picnic in the Park programs in Murrow and Monroe parks along Pennsylvania Avenue.

Farragut Fridays

The Golden Triangle’s signature Farragut Fridays series will run from May 11 through September 28. Each week, the BID transforms the park into a community gathering place for area workers, residents and visitors. Throughout the day, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Farragut Fridays features Outdoor Office presented by Comcast Business, with free Wi-Fi, charging stations and comfortable chairs, allowing area workers to work outside in a relaxing environment. From noon to 2 p.m. at each of the Farragut Fridays celebrations, café seating and picnic tables are added for lunchtime visitors. Each of the Farragut Fridays include lawn games, such as giant Jenga, cornhole and ping-pong. On some weeks, architectural firms, including KGP Design Studio, will be building design creations using large EverBlocks.

Interactive pop-up activities take over various areas of the park, from noon to 2 p.m., to add even more to the weekly events. Scheduled pop-up partners for the 2018 season include the International Spy Museum, Plaza Arts, D.C. Public Library, Eye Street Massage Therapy, and Wolf Trap. The Humane Rescue Alliance will also be participating, by bringing adoptable dogs and cats out to the park. The non-profit, artist-centered organization, Transformer, will be sponsoring a Crochet Jam event as part of the By the People festival.

In addition, the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum will present its “Handi-Hours” program and performances from artists from the Burning Man community. These activities are part of the Golden Triangle’s collaboration with the gallery on the outdoor exhibition, No Spectators: Beyond the Renwick, an extension of the Renwick’s in-museum exhibition that features large-scale, Burning Man artworks at six locations in the neighborhood. The exhibition was made possible with support from Lyft.

Golden Cinema

The Golden Triangle’s 10-week Golden Cinema outdoor movie series starts on June 1, featuring Friday night movies under the stars, beginning at sunset, in Farragut Square. Movie-lovers are encouraged to arrive early, grab a picnic dinner from a nearby restaurant and enjoy their time in the park. This year’s series of free movies kicks off with Academy Award Best Picture nominee, The Post, featuring a special introduction of the movie by former Washington Post Executive Editor Leonard Downie, Jr. Other movies in the series include La La Land, Casablanca and Coco, along with the grand finale, Black Panther.
