After touring extensively in Europe, LOVE HATE made its United States debut in Farragut Square Park. Created by German artist Mia Florentine Weiss, LOVE HATE is an ambigram that reads “love” from one side, and “hate” from the other side. The large scale steel structures measure more than seven feet tall and about 16 feet long each.
LOVE HATE was presented by the Delegation of the European Union, the Golden Triangle Business Improvement District, and the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Washington, DC, offering culture and vitality to visitors, residents, and workers as they began returning downtown.
“It’s an ambiguous yet powerful message that symbolizes how we can turn hate into love through a change of perspective. It celebrates our unity as humans through our diversities, a message which resonates with all of us. LOVE HATE is a giant message on the street that we have a choice to make each day. We can choose to focus on love.” – Mia Florentine Weiss
More than 200 guests came out to Farragut Square Park on Tuesday, November 9, at 2 p.m. to celebrate the ribbon-cutting for the LOVE HATE sculpture.
The ceremony included brief remarks, an interview with the artist, and an interactive activity for the public to write and express their thoughts regarding the impact of the LOVE HATE artwork. After the ceremony, guests enjoyed light refreshments while mingling in the park and interacting with the newest art in the Golden Triangle.
