Historic Call Boxes

Historic Call Boxes

The Golden Triangle Business Improvement District presents Art on Call, an initiative that makes art out of history by repurposing historic call boxes for vibrant public art.

Beginning in the 1860s, emergency call boxes were scattered throughout Washington, DC, serving as a crucial lifeline to contact police and fire services. In the 1970s, the call boxes became obsolete with advancements in communication systems. Since then, community initiatives have transformed the call boxes to honor the past while celebrating creativity.

The call boxes throughout the Golden Triangle feature artworks from local artist Jennifer Brewer Stone’s “Dance of Life” series. Each of the six call boxes displays a unique piece from the series, all united by vibrant pops of color and intricate depictions of nature.
