Flamenco, Aboriginal Choir, Cornhole & Bocce Ball Coming to the District’s New Office/Arts Neighborhood This Summer

Wide Range of Midday Outdoor Fun in the Golden Triangle

Washington, DC (May 16, 2024) — The Golden Triangle Business Improvement District today revealed a packed schedule of art and cultural events unfolding all summer long in outdoor spaces near office buildings. The entertainment will happen alongside a series of sports tournaments, including cornhole and bocce ball, and are open to all.

The latest events come amid a renewed excitement across the District for the way the Golden Triangle has emerged as a new cultural destination and lunch spot.

“More people are returning downtown this year and we’re excited to offer lots of new ways to engage, enrich, and entertain,” said Leona Agouridis, President and CEO of the Golden Triangle BID. “We’d love to see more people come outside and stay awhile to enjoy Golden Triangle restaurants and head to the parks for some fun.”

The 2024 GLDN+ Events are designed to spark fun in two local Golden Triangle parks.

Lunch Culture in Murrow Park will showcase enriching cultural entertainment. Farragut Field Days will be held in Farragut Square and include lawn games and friendly sports tournaments.

Lunch Culture will introduce a series of entertaining, enriching, and diverse shows in Murrow Park. Program partners include DC Flamenco, Taberna del Alaberdero, Capital Fringe, the Australian Embassy, and Rorschach Theatre. Engaging experiences will showcase cultural arts, such as dance, theater, and singing. Lunch Culture will run noon to 1:30 p.m.

  • Wed., Jun. 5 – Flamenco dancing with DC Flamenco and Taberna del Alabardero featuring Cuadro Flamenco
  • Th., Jun. 20 – Capital Fringe programming
  • Wed., Jul. 10 – Singing with the Australian Embassy featuring Djinama Yilaga, a Yuin choir from the South Coast of New South Wales, Australia
  • Th., Jul. 11 – Capital Fringe programming
  • Wed., Sept. 25 – Theatrical performance with Rorschach Theatre featuring a preview of SLEEPING GIANT

The first Lunch Culture on June 5 will kick off with a press conference at 11 a.m. that includes Mayor Bowser and other District officials to celebrate the reopening of the adjacent Penn Avenue pocket park. The pocket park is being updated to include new shade sculptures by artist, My Ly. The Golden Triangle’s updates to the park are made possible by the Streets for People grant program under the DC Office of Planning.

Farragut Field Days will build towards three tournaments:

  • Tu., June 4 – Bocce Ball Tournament
  • Tu., July 2 – Table Tennis Tournament
  • Tu., Sept. 3 – Cornhole Tournament

The Field Days are being held in partnership with Volo Sports and include lawn games like ladder golf, ping pong, giant Connect 4, giant dominoes, and giant Legos. Anyone interested in participating in a tournament is encouraged to register in advanceFarragut Field Days will run noon to 1:30 p.m.

“We build community around social sports throughout the metropolitan area,” said Aaron Krotman of Volo Sports. “We’re happy to partner with the Golden Triangle to encourage some lunchtime smiles and competition with our partnered tournaments.”

GLDN+ Outdoor Office has also returned for the year. Open daily, Outdoor Office offers seating and tables among the Golden Triangle’s green spaces in Farragut Square, Longfellow, Murrow, and Monroe parks throughout the warmer seasons.

In addition to GLDN+ Events, the Golden Triangle is again hosting a Bike to Work Day pitstop on Fri., May 17, between 7– 9 a.m.  Bike to Work Day registrants can pick up a free T–shirt at the Farragut Square pitstop. All bicyclists are welcome to drop by the stop, which will feature a bike fix-it station, water refill coolers, a demonstration by Rumble Boxing, and samples from Teaism.

The 2024 GLDN+ Events complement the Golden Triangle BID’s work to reimagine downtown. The recently released Downtown Action Plan recommends arts, culture, and entertainment among key actionable areas for bringing more people into DC’s central business district.
