Washington, DC (September 9, 2020) — The Golden Triangle Business Improvement District (BID) announces the installation of the 500th bike rack in DC’s central business district through its partnership with the District Department of Transportation (DDOT). There is now parking for 1,000 bikes on the sidewalks of the Golden Triangle as each bike rack provides parking for two bikes. The initiative improves multimodal mobility in DC and helps to enhance the environmental sustainability of the metropolitan area.
“We have seen an increase in biking over the past decade and we expect the pandemic to accelerate this trend. Ensuring the Golden Triangle is a bike-friendly neighborhood is a priority for us and we are proud to partner with DDOT on the bike-rack installations,” said Leona Agouridis, Executive Director of the Golden Triangle BID.
The BID and DDOT have collaborated on bike rack installations since 2018. Funded through DDOT’s BID Reimbursable Maintenance Program, the Golden Triangle identifies locations and installs the racks. The initiative added 137 racks over the past two years. This year, a total of 80 bike rack installations are planned.
Increasing bike parking is only one way the Golden Triangle supports biking in, to and from the central business district. The BID worked with DDOT on the design and implementation of the L Street bike lane — one of the city’s first protected bike lanes — and the M Street bike lane. To increase accessibility and safety for cyclists, the BID regularly tracks issues such as potholes, missing bike lane bollards, and street markings on the bike lanes in the Golden Triangle.
The BID is currently assisting DDOT with the design and implementation of the 17th Street and 20th Street bike lanes. During COVID-19, the BID has partnered with DDOT on sidewalk extensions to allow for better social distancing. The Golden Triangle and DDOT are also collaborating on the redesign of Penn West, Pennsylvania Avenue west of the White House, which will include protected bike lanes, additional green spaces, and stormwater infrastructure.
