WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 1, 2024) – Amid growing interest in art and theater activities in DC’s downtown, the Golden Triangle Business Improvement District (BID) announced today a new pop-up play premiering April 12. Rorschach Theatre will be presenting ‘Human Museum’ a dark comedy that tells the story of robots on Earth who are working on an exhibit to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the extinction of humanity.
Rorschach is staging the play in the former Big & Tall Men’s Store vacant space at Connecticut Ave. and L St. NW, where they’ve previously produced shows about 90s rock music last summer and zombies last Halloween. This latest production marks another indication that the Rorschach Theatre believes the Golden Triangle office corridor can also serve as a hotspot for theater.
‘Human Museum’ coincides with the immensely popular Artomatic art pop-up show that has been attracting thousands of people each week to the Golden Triangle to see local artists showcase their work in a former office building.
“Rorschach productions are always entertaining and the robots are a fun way to explore themes reflecting these times, especially the role of AI,” said Leona Agouridis, President of the Golden Triangle Business Improvement District. “Having this theater production on one side of the BID and an enormous pop-up art show down the street highlights how we are evolving as a neighborhood.”
Building owner Lerner Enterprises is providing Rorschach Theatre with the space as part of the Golden Triangle BID’s Grow Golden effort, which is a broader campaign intended to fill vacant retail space with diverse, local businesses and provide more amenities to the neighborhood for visitors and workers.
The Golden Triangle BID is at the forefront of efforts by the District government and business community to rethink old ways of organizing downtown business areas in the years since the pandemic changed work patterns. Agouridis and other District leaders have developed the Downtown Action Plan – a series of proposed interventions to reinvigorate DC’s downtown. Recommendations in that plan include investing in more green space; building a tech community centered around an innovation district, universities, and a global marketplace; and increasing artistic and cultural ventures.
“Miyoko Conley’s play is funny and wise,” says Randy Baker, artistic director at Rorschach. “Though it is about the end of the world, it is inherently hopeful. The apocalypse is not an end – it is a beginning. These robots are building something new and it is beautiful.”
The robots in ‘Human Museum’ are working on their exhibit when they get a bizarre radio transmission that disrupts everything they thought they knew about people. The museum created by the robots explores how the legacy of humanity will carry forward.
The show will run from April 12 to May 5 at 1020 Connecticut Avenue NW. The play lasts 90-minutes and a bar will be open before every performance. More information and tickets can be found at: https://rorschachtheatre.thundertix.com.
