WASHINGTON, D.C. – November 13, 2024 – The Golden Triangle Business Improvement District (BID) has transformed six outdated emergency call boxes, used in the last century to contact police and firefighters, to vivid new artwork displays in DC’s commercial core.
The historic call boxes became obsolete for emergency services decades ago. Now the call boxes sport a fresh coat of black and gold paint and vibrant artwork from local artist Jennifer Brewer Stone.
Six artworks from Stone’s “Dance of Life” series are featured among the call boxes, which can be found at street corners from 17th to 20th Streets NW, and between L and G Streets NW. A full map is here.
“A goal of our public art program is to cultivate unexpected experiences that bring a smile to people’s faces as they head to work, our restaurants, and other spots in the community,” said Leona Agouridis, President of the Golden Triangle BID. “Each of Jennifer’s bright and cheerful artworks adds an element of interest and a pleasant surprise to our streets.”
The artworks from Stone were installed this fall and complement other public art around the BID, including bold wooden sculptures from Foon Sham and stunning mosaics from Valerie Theberge.
“I love making these important call boxes from our history come alive with bursts of color in the Golden Triangle. I hope these designs bring joy and inspire people each day,” said Stone.
